American Legion Riders Veteran Support Services - Vets Helping Vets

The Blue Star Banner program by The American Legion Riders of Valdosta Ga., Post 13.

We strive to revive the tradition of the Blue Star Banners as well as showing the families Americans do care about our soldiers . Our mission is to honor both the parents and soldiers using motorcycles and The American Legion.

We will deliver free of charge a Blue Star Banner and an American Legion Certificate of Honor to anybody who has a family member serving in our military in this time of war.

If you have a family member serving in Afghanistan Iraq and would like to be honored or you know a family that have a family member deployed please contact us to do an honor mission for them.

We felt that our soldiers were not treated like they were coming home from Vietnam and wanted a way to show the soldiers and their families that people in America cared. This is our way to thank our military members for the freedom that protect for all of us.

A typical mission will go something like this:

  1. Have a delivery time and date preplanned with the recipients. If possible have the Ride Captain confirm the delivery site for the group to allow accessibility for a group of motorcycles to come and go safely.
  2. Roll up with motorcycles leaving them two by two off the road as much as possible. This is done rather than individuals taking the time to back their motorcycles to the curb. If necessary we post road guards for traffic to safely move past the motorcycles. Introduce yourself to the family member and give a brief description of what we will be doing. Bring the group in close proximity and bring them to attention.
  3. We will then present the soldier if available, or the parents with the Certificate of Honor along with the Blue Star Banner. Then a brief  review of the symbolism of the Blue Star Banner along with the gratitude of the group for their service in a time of war is given.
  4. The group then does a meet and greet with hand shakes or hugs. We then ask the recipient to pick a motorcycle to stand behind for a picture. The group will fall in behind for the picture.
  5. We then send a picture to their local newspaper to honor them and present contact information for others interested. We also send pictures back to the families for their enjoyment.

This is how a mission should go, there are always changes to each mission to match the Situation however the purpose of each mission is to honor the family.
